RENDI by Jeff Callaway (Texas Outlaw Poet)

RENDI
I can still remember
every time
that we cruised on those
back roads and smoked weed
listening to Sublime
and all of the guys
have always said you are so fine
for those lost lovesick years of lust
alone they’ve pined
but you would never give them the time
of day
you were always too cool for them
anyway
so my sweet soul sister
just let me say
that you are like a summer rain
to soothe my swollen sweltering days
which turn my amber
waves of grain
you are a psychedelic chardonnay
you are my morphine
my cure for pain
the pinky to this poet’s brain
you are both incessant and insane
but Laurenda is your real name
and you are my only
sister Rendi
and really
my closest relative
unrelenting
always by my side
unbending
our blood is binding
and when I’m lost you always find me
and bring me home
safe
so please please keep me
from these trains
which howl through my head
and haunt my veins
to fight my heart for health and wealth
from fame to shame
but you always say I’m not the one to blame
even when I am
you pick me up when I am down
so let’s always embrace
this platonic love we’ve found
and all that we have
Hag-Bat
aka Haggotha
my Madame Butterfly hooray!
And all of the Old Man’s old pet nicknames
all just to say
that I will always love you
Rendi Callaway
